I rarely do online reviews, but Kevin and his company have earned every bit of an awful rating and I feel the need to warn others who might work with Woodscape: design skills, knowledge of materials, overall quality of work = average. Where you’ll end up regretting working with Woodscape is in the extremely poor communication, project management, and ‘don’t care’ attitude. If you work with Woodscape, you can expect your project to drag on frustratingly for months beyond what it should take to complete, and you’ll never get an honest answer about where things stand. The best part is Kevin makes it clear he could care less. Buyer beware!

This review involves divorce, demolition, and eventually utter delight. If you’re intrigued, sit back, and enjoy. About a year ago I had lunch with an old high school friend who I hadn’t seen in many, many years. We had a great time. But once the beers were gone and we had run out of goofy high school stories to tell, the most interesting thing happened. My friend calmly looked at his empty beer mug and said, “I almost got divorced.” My mind raced to all the obvious things possible. I kept my head down, not sure what to say and stared into my empty mug. Cautiously, I asked what happened. He looked up and in the most deadpan manner possible said… “kitchen remodeling.” I had no idea what he was talking about. For the next 30 minutes he described a year-long horrible ordeal they had recently experienced with a kitchen remodeling contractor. Yep, you read that right… YEAR LONG. He explained how the contractor they chose did a horrible job that drove he and his wife to the brink of divorce. Little did he know my wife and I had been saving every penny for years to build the kitchen of our dreams and were actively looking for a contractor. His words followed me around for weeks. What if we picked the wrong contractor? Would our contractor take a year and severely disrupt our lives? Flash forward – we are so grateful. We found Northern Virginia’s best kitchen and bathroom contractor — Gene and Judy Gamble of Renewal Homes Remodeling (www.renewalhomesdmv.com)! We just finished our dream kitchen and great room remodeling with Renewal Homes. Gene and Judy – and their amazing crew of designers and craftspeople – came up with ideas and touches we would have never imagined. For example, they took an underutilized space in our kitchen and turned it into a wet bar — which I LOVE. They recommended knocking down a half-wall to open up the kitchen to the great room. Their expertise on appliances, fixtures and tile/quartz selections were top-notch. To say it all worked out perfectly would be an understatement. Renewal Homes Remodeling gave us the kitchen and great room of our dreams. And equally important, they were on time and on budget! Due to the hard work of Gene and Judy — and their incredible crews — everything from start to finish was perfect. Potomac Kitchen & Bath a week ago

We love our kitchen, but it’s only because we worked tirelessly to track the project, detect and fix their frequent mistakes, and keep them actually coming to work to avoid huge delays. We understand that working with contractors on home remodeling often comes with delays, but here are some details of this saga with Potomac. There are other negative reviews like this in their history, but we trusted a larger number of positive reviews. Please don’t make that same mistake!!! – The project start was delayed for over 1 month while waiting for a permit for construction. They kept saying we just needed to wait and that the application was pending approval. We eventually contacted the city permit office and found that the permit application was improperly filed and had been denied immediately, without any re-submission. Potomac only re-filed correctly after we brought this to their attention (after they had even asked us NOT to directly contact the permit office). – We never knew whether they would be working or not, and there were many weeks with only 1-2 days of work being done. This was a problem throughout – We asked for a strong dust barrier to protect our living space due to allergies and respiratory issues. The barrier they used looked flimsy and frequently had gaps open. Friends who saw the barrier informed us that contractors in their homes always used strong barriers with zip closures. – Communication was nearly impossible. We complained about these difficulties early on, and we were assigned a special project manager. He became increasingly hard to contact and usually dismissed our concerns. He discouraged us from speaking directly to Spanish-speaking workers on site. Thankfully my wife is fluent in Spanish and found after talking to many of these workers that they didn’t understand directions they received from the project manager because they didn’t speak English fluently and he didn’t use any translator – Just before granite was installed we noticed that our corner lazy susan cabinet seemed small and wouldn’t fit many of our pots and pans. Our project manager said we should have thought of this before confirming the kitchen layout and that nothing could be done without considerable expense to us. We then measured ourselves and found that they had installed the wrong one and had been using an outdated kitchen layout instead of the finalized one we had all agreed on. This improperly ordered and installed corner cabinet had led to downstream mistakes in other cabinet sizes being used, and many had to be re-ordered and re-installed, adding considerable delay to the project – Potomac recommended fastening the dishwasher directly to the underside of the granite with bolts. Our granite supplier had told us that this was not standard of practice, and threatened the stability and longevity of the granite. He gave alternatives to this that he said were standard among contractors, but had not been offered to us by Potomac. – After completion of the kitchen remodel, we noted problems to Potomac about a faulty drawer, an unstable dishwasher, and some concerns about toekick installation. At one point our project manager visited the house and inspected the issues. He said someone would come soon to fix them. His recommendation for the dishwasher was to fasten a bolt through the finished interior of the dishwasher into the adjacent cabinets. We contacted our appliance store service department and they sent a certified tech who simply adjusted the feet of the dishwasher. He said putting a bolt through the interior would have voided the warranty and caused leak issues, and that he had never heard of this being done. – Nobody ever came to fix the other issues. The initial request for service was several months ago and despite 10+ texts, emails to our project manager and the head of the company, and multiple calls, we still have not had these issues repaired. Our 1 year warranty on labor will expire soon and we are fairly sure they are intentionally dragging their feet to allow this time to elapse
