The whole process from project design to cleaning the work area was stress free. The work crew were very courteous and answered all of our questions. There was some minor damage to one of the walls which they pointed out to us and said it would be repaired at their expense. The next day the owner Curtis and his wife Melanie came and made the necessary repair. That’s customer Service at a whole new level.

My home definitely feels safer from Carmean Electric’s work. They have performed two jobs at my home. After I moved into a new home, wiring in my basement was repaired and a dangerous issue was resolved. The problem did not reoccur. More recently, my fan motor broke, and electrical arcing and smoking occurred. The broken fan was removed and my new fan was installed. Exposed wiring near the fan was also covered so again, my safety was prioritized. Finally, I’d like to compliment the professionalism of staff, they were on time and performed great work.

I hired them to replace a gfci for a customer. It was not completed, when I showed up the box was left open. I do believe this was mostly miscommunication. After, informing the company it was not up to standards, they immediately went to work making it right. They corrected the situation within 2 days. I am 3hrs away and they were great with sending pictures and keep me in the loop. They are on the more expensive side, but if they work this hard to make sure things are right. It worth it.

Unfortunately our job happened in the middle old management and new management, old employees and new employees. We had several items that missed or unfinished but Curtis made sure everything was correct and up and running. He was committed to providing us with the best service possible and didn’t leave us high and dry with excuses of that was them this is us, etc.

I am not usually one to put a company on blast using social media, but I feel that others need to be warned about using Carmean Electric of Springfield so they are not taken advantage of the way we were. To be clear, this is the Carmean Electric in Springfield and Taylorville, not the one operating out of southern Illinois. We recently had an issue with the electrical in our home (lights flickering on and off like we were in Stranger Things 😳) and hired Carmean to diagnose and fix the issue. They came out promptly and on a Saturday, which we were thankful for, but that is where the thankfulness ends. They spent 8 hours attempting to diagnose the problem, of course charging us by the hour. At hour 8 when I pushed them asking why they still didn’t know what was wrong, the diagnosis was immediately complete (first of many red flags in hindsight). They determined that the underground electrical line that ran from the transformer to our house was bad and they would have to replace everything that ran to the house. They showed up early the following Monday and completed the work. This is where the problems really start. After the work was done and paid for, we uncovered some problems. Problem 1, we found out that Carmean is not licensed to do work in the city of Springfield. Since they are not licensed, they did not obtain the required permits. Since the work was not licensed or permitted, the city cannot certify the work was done up to code. I verified all of this with the city’s electrical inspector and licensor. Problem 2, we learned that what they charged us was roughly 3 times what the going rate for the work they did would be. This was confirmed by other contractors, after the fact. This is the first electrical issue we have ever had so we were unaware what electrical repairs cost. Problem 3, the fact that they spent 8 hours diagnosing the problem is also out of line. I am no electrician but was easily able to learn that to find a break in an underground wire an underground fault detector is used to pinpoint the break that needs repaired. This obviously takes much less time. Also properly diagnosing the issue would have meant they could have repaired just the break in the line, instead of digging up our entire yard and running all new wire (at much greater cost). When the work was done and paid for, we asked for an invoice showing the work was paid for in full. We got a very generic word document that stated the job was paid for but lacking any detail. When I followed up asking for a detailed invoice, they were unable to provide a breakdown of materials cost, equipment cost and labor cost, which was also fishy. When confronted with all of this information Curtis Ryen, the owner of Carmean was indifferent. He first claimed that they are licensed, then that they didn’t need to be licensed, finally saying he was confused about the licensing requirements. This is not believable as the city confirmed it has sent Carmean Electric orders to cease work in Springfield, because they are not licensed. Today we also received a copy of the numerous violations they have incurred. We are going to continue pursuing rectification to the furthest extent possible. Please don’t make the same mistake we did by hiring such dishonest people.

I am very happy with the job done by Carmean Electric! They are under new ownership and dedicated to providing good service. I lost power due to an underground issue. They came out that day, repaired the line and got our power back on. We have a well pump so it was crucial that we get our power restored asap. I would definitely recommend them and already have plans to hire them for other less emergent jobs in the future.

I bought a commercial building in springfield Illinois. It had sat empty for ten years and needed a complete renovation. In December I had a contract with Carmean electric for phase 1. I immediately sent him half of the total with the other half due on completion. Somewhere along the line, they began charging me by the hour. $67.00 per hour for phone calls and meeting with inspectors. The statements I received from them were vague and after numerous emails and phone calls I still have not received an itemized statement. I don’t even have enough room to tell you how bad they over charged me. And when I asked for an itemized statement, after paying them several thousand dollars, they threatened to send me to collections in ten days. I have perfect credit and do not want them to ruin it, so I paid them. The electrician charged me for installation of a fire wall and stairs. I have paid receipts for the contractor who did them. The electrician’s work should not have taken 7 months. The secretary told me the electrician, Pete, billed me for payments of $11,000.00 to my contractor. I have a text from the contractor stating he was only paid $2700.00 by Carmean. I was mislead by Pete when he told me they do carpentry work too. Carmean actually hired Morgan contractors and was billing me a percentage of their fees. Fees I paid Morgan construction directly. I would NOT recommend Carmean to my worst enemies.

Very unprofessional company. The secretary Barbie decided after she took my deposit in April that she no longer wanted to do business with me in July because I kept calling about when they were going to come out and do the work. After the city sent them a email with all inspectors attached, and stated they needed to get the job done by August 11th, they completed the job July 20th, but not before sending the remaining balance of $362 to collections the day before on July 19th. No to mention I had made all previous payments and was waiting on them to do the job before I made the last payment. Over 3 months I waited for a job that only took about 4hours. If they didn’t have the man power to do all these jobs there taking deposits for, they should let ppl know. I was told in April when I made the 50 percent down, down payment, the job would be done in a week. After doing my research, I found out they have had this issue with multiple clients across the city which ranges from 6 month delays to over charging and sending unprecedented amounts to collections after work is completed.

Appointment was scheduled several days ahead of time for 9:30 am. They didn’t show on time and they didn’t even call. We called them to find out why the delay and they said they had had an emergency. And to wait for the electrician. At 12:30 pm we called back and were informed that they were not coming (they didn’t bother to let us know) and that it would take weeks to get on their schedule. Totally unprofessional and rude (we didn’t even receive an apology).

Carmean has done work for me on a couple of occasions, most recently, about 3-4 months ago. They’re very reasonable & do good work, but my impression is that they tend to schedule more work than they can get to in a reasonable time. My project took longer than it should have to finish, and several phone calls to see when they would show up next. A three to five day job turned into a one month job before completion.
