James River Construction brought our vision to life, with professionalism, attention to detail and extraordinary quality. We set out to craft an addition to a beloved family home that would respect its history but address its limitations. The result is a light-filled living area that embraces its wooded surroundings, invites family gatherings and wows us each time we arrive home. In the end, what impressed us most about James River was not just the 99% of things that went right — it was their approach to the inevitable bumps that will arise with any construction project. They listened and found solutions. Kudos to the staff, and particularly to Raven, our project manager, for his tenacity in getting the details right. We couldn’t be happier.

Enjoyable, on time, and within budget. Three descriptors you rarely hear describing a contractor. But that’s exactly how I’d describe the process with JRC. We recently completed an addition on our 1940’s Cape Cod – adding a new family room, owners suite, and patio. In our initial discussions, we worked with Ben. He was friendly and responsive. He provided us an initial estimate and facilitated the initial design and described what to expect out of the process start to finish. The next step was working with an architect and Kelly, the designer, to finalize the plan. From there we worked closely with Kelly to make our selections. She has a gift for seeing what is possible and brought our vision to life. When the project broke ground, Stephen was our assigned project manager. He consistently went above and beyond. He provided us constant communication and was on site most days. Notably, Stephen kept the project on schedule and on budget despite the inflation and supply chain challenges. The project came with a one year warranty. A couple of months post completion, we had a small issue pop up. JRC took care of the issue the next day – on a holiday weekend. Overall, we can’t say enough good things about them and our experience. Would HIGHLY recommend!

We worked with James River Construction on an extensive renovation and addition. James River’s craftsmanship, professionalism, and attention to detail are all first class. I’ll also highlight their communication, honesty, and integrity. We would absolutely use them for another project of our own and highly recommend them to anyone. Our finished product exceeded expectation, and we are really enjoying the renovation James River Construction created for us (which feels like a brand new home). Thanks again to the entire JRC team.

We worked with James River on a recent kitchen renovation which started as the pandemic started ramping up last year. Despite many groups shutting down their activity, James River remained on schedule from start to finish. The project manager overseeing our project was present every day and responsive no matter how big or small the request was. From the top of the team to the subcontractors, we felt everyone that worked on the house was respectful, talented, and focused on helping us achieve a great outcome. We would use James River again in the future and remain appreciative of their time and effort.

They wouldn’t even consider us as a client because our project was in there words “too low of a budget.” Our budget was $55,000 dollars.

JRC recently completed a 7 month renovation of our home, and we are extremely pleased with the results and our overall experience. Through careful and thoughtful planning, they turned what could have potentially been a nightmare – living in a home under renovation with two small children – into a manageable process. I contacted James River Construction during a a true nightmare of a renovation. President Ken Felts came out to our home and put our minds at ease by walking us through the process and outlining what James River could do to help. Ultimately, we had to put the project on hold but I felt safe and secure moving forward with James River after vetting a number of other contractors. He even rolled up his sleeves in 90 degree weather to assist us in moving refrigerator to a second story apartment. I won’t forget his act of kindness and I look forward to working with James River in the future.

The team at JRC is truly the “triple threat” of contractors in Richmond: high quality, great value, and professional through and through. They completely remodeled our master bath and kitchen to stunning results. Everyone was patient and thorough as we worked through the design process and anything that needed to be addressed along the way. As Ken, the founder, says, “Getting the last 1% right is the most important part,” and that puts JRC in a different class than others I have worked with in the past.
